Eurostat rates new EU sustainability indicators

EU statistical agency Eurostat has rated the quality of seven new indicators added to a list of economic, social and environmental trends tracked each year in the European Commission's "Spring report" to EU leaders (EED 22/01/04). Two have environmental angles: the farmland bird population index and number of healthy life years. Both get a medium-quality "B" rating for data reliability and geographical spread. There are now nearly 50 indicators in the full list. Fourteen have been designated as headline indicators that will track EU progress over several years. See Eurostat indicators report.
