The European Commission has announced an in-depth investigation into British plans to relieve nuclear services firm BNFL of UK£42bn (€60bn) of decommissioning liabilities. The government wants to create a new body next year to take on most such liabilities arising from historic, public sector atomic energy and research programmes. The UK industry ministry expressed confidence that the investigation would clear the state aid as legal. Environmentalists were divided over the investigation, which was criticised by FoE Europe but welcomed by Greenpeace.
