German court quashes pack deposits challenge

Germany's constitutional court (BVG) has again dismissed a legal challenge to the government's deposits one one-way drinks containers. Thirty-two retailers and drinks packagers brought the case after failing to persuade Germany's highest administrative court to hear their complaints over implementation of deposits in the state of North-Rhine Westphalia in January 2003 (EED 06/01/03). The government has now won a string of domestic legal victories over its deposits policy. It is currently working to alter the legal basis for deposits while smoothing their practical use (EED 03/11/04). BVG, tel: +49 721 91010.
