There is virtually no photovoltaic solar power in the EU's eight new eastern European member states plus accession countries Bulgaria and Romania, according to a report produced for the European Commission and recently presented in the Polish science ministry. Combined capacity in the ten countries is 0.7 megawatts, the report says, compared with 600MW in the EU-15 plus Switzerland and Norway. Lack of financial support and too little cooperation between scientists and industry are identified as the main barriers to growth. See project website and report.
