EU approves more Natura protected site lists

The EU has consolidated its Natura 2000 network by approving a draft inventory of protected nature sites in the Continental and Atlantic biogeographical zones. The 7,000 sites, mainly in the EU's western member states, join a smaller number already approved for the Macaronesian (EED 18/01/02) and Alpine (EED 13/01/04) biogeographical zones. Lists for three other zones - the Boreal, the Mediterranean and the Pannonian - have still to follow. See European Commission press release and background memo.
