EU pressed to manage oil tanker phase-out

Greenpeace has urged the EU to stop a global phase-out of single-hulled oil tankers which it won leading to a new "environmental disaster" in the form of a surge in unsafe shipbreaking in Asia. In a report timed to coincide with a meeting of EU transport ministers, the group estimated that 1,120 tankers will need to be scrapped in the next 13 months, 334 of them European owned or registered. It urged tough enforcement of the EU waste shipments regulation and creation of a definititve list of single-hulled tankers subject to phase-out. See press release.
