Green light for German lorry charging system

Toll consortium granted business licence to start satellite-based motorway charges from 1 January

Lorries will start having to pay charges for using Germany's motorways from 1 January after the government certified that the sophisticated satellite-based scheme functions properly. The charge was to be introduced at the beginning of 2004 but was delayed due to persistent technical problems (EED 06/10/03).

The government plans to spend the lion's share of predicted €3bn revenues in 2005 on road building and maintenance. The rest is to be spent on the railways and waterways as well as for the federal budget.
