Italy facing court over environmental gas tax

The European Commission is to challenge an Italian environmental tax on Algerian natural gas imports before the European court of justice. The EU executive alleges that the tax, passed by the Sicilian regional authorities in 2002, infringes the EU common customs tariff. This establishes a principle of equal customs duties on products imported from non-EU countries bordering the Community and prohibits member states from introducing unilaterally new duties or charges having equivalent effect on such goods.
