Farmers reject EU plan to legislate on soils

EU farmers' associations have expressed total opposition to the European Commission's plan to propose a soils framework directive as part of a thematic strategy on soil protection next month. Soil differs from air and water in having an owner, and any EU strategy must take account of this, insisted Copa and Cogeca. The common agricultural policy already contains many elements that protect soils, they add. We "therefore cannot accept a soil framework directive". The Commission launched a last consultation before the strategy in July (EED 01/08/05). See press release and position paper.
