Ministers reject stricter mining waste rules

EU governments and the European parliament will have to hold head-to-head negotiations to finalise new rules on mining waste, it was confirmed on Thursday. Energy ministers rubber stamped a council decision not to accept all second reading amendments tabled by the parliament in September (EED 07/09/05). The conciliation procedure will now be triggered. At the same meeting, the council also formally cleared the way for a directive on recyclability standards for new cars to enter into force. See energy council press release.
