Basque government approves water tax

The government of Spain's Basque region approved on Tuesday a water law one notable for including a water ecotax on consumers. The new tax is the first of its kind in Spain. Subject to parliamentary approval, it all water users will pay a flat rate of 6 euro cents per cubic metre to "compensate for the environmental impact of water extraction". The law implements in full and well ahead of the 2010 deadline all rules in the EU's water framework directive, including internalisation of environmental costs in prices, the regional government claimed.
