Growing genetically modified crops has produced significant economic and environmental benefits, according to a study by UK consultancy PG Economics. The study investigates world-wide impacts of the first nine years of GM crop cultivation, 1996-2004. Among its conclusions are that pesticide use was cut by 6%, and its environmental footprint by 14%, and that in 2004, GM crop growing avoided greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 10bn kg of CO2.
