European packaging firms have launched a major programme to monitor trends in packaging use, aimed at "creating a platform for fact-based stakeholder dialogue". The 'European shopping baskets' initiative will track packaging for around 100 commonly purchased products, initially in five countries. The data will be related to social and demographic trends. The research will "demonstrate the complexity" of meeting "often conflicting demands placed on packaging systems" and support environmental improvements in the industry, sector association Europen said on Wednesday.
