Deal in sight on EU equipment noise rules

The EU institutions look set to finalise at first reading a watering down of noise limits on certain outdoor equipment such as construction machinery. For eight types of equipment, stricter limits pending in 2006 are "technically impossible" to achieve, representatives of the council of ministers, European parliament and European commission have agreed according to a document released by the council. The directive was proposed by the commission less than three months ago (EED 07/09/05). See draft directive.
