New exemptions to RoHS law published

A law making exemptions from the EU's restrictions on hazardous substances (RoHS) directive was published in the bloc's official journal on 21 October. The exemptions include the use of lead in optical and filter glass and electronic ceramic parts, and cadmium in electrical contacts. The European Commission was initially given the go-ahead by a member states' committee last December, but it was then forced to restart the process after the parliament complained that its right of scrutiny had been by-passed (EED 16/02/05). See Commission decision (2005/747/EC).
