Steady increase in EU recycling rates

Recycling rates in the EU paper, steel and aluminium sectors continued to increase in 2004, according to new industry figures. The paper industry edged closer to the 56% target that it has promised to reach by the end of 2005, with a 54.6% recycling rate in 2004, up 0.5 percentage points on the previous year. The rates in the steel packaging sector and in the aluminium beverage can sector increased to 60% and just under 50% respectively.
