SRU calls for return to European commission's original proposal as deadline for decisions draws closer

The German government's official panel of environmental experts (SRU) has warned EU lawmakers against watering down the European Commission's original proposal for the Reach chemical policy.

The SRU said on Thursday that, following an evaluation of the various proposals, it found that the Commission's were by far the most effective in addressing risks of unregistered chemicals. It claimed that proposals made in the European parliament's internal market committee would spawn a "bureaucratic monster" without guaranteeing the same level of chemical safety.
