Officials from some 40 countries debated the EU's drive for greater energy efficiency at a conference hosted by the UK government in London this week. Opening the meeting, UK environment minister Margaret Beckett said an EU action plan due next year could "spearhead global efforts" towards greater energy efficiency. EU energy commissioner Andris Piebalgs stressed that measures identified in a June green paper were cost-effective and achievable (EED 22/06/05). "Much closer and vigorous" international cooperation is needed, he said. See UK environment ministry press release and Piebalgs speech.
