EU environment commissioner marks first year in office with list of top-ten achievements

The European commission has made "remarkable progress" on environmental protection in the last year, according to environment commissioner Stavros Dimas. Mr Dimas released a list of "ten key achievements" to mark the first anniversary of the Barroso commission, which passed on Tuesday. Among steps highlighted are new initiatives on mercury and aviation, the first of seven promised thematic environmental strategies and hard work behind the scenes to finalise the Reach chemicals policy.
