EU renewable energy plans postponed

Commission holds biomass action plan and report on green electricity support for further scrutiny

Two EU policy papers on renewable energy have been postponed for discussion by the European commission's competitiveness group following an intervention by enterprise commissioner G√ľnter Verheugen. An action plan on biomass energy (EED 26/05/04) and a review of EU support schemes for renewable electricity (EED 18/10/05) were both due out on Wednesday.

* In a related development, on Wednesday EU renewable energy federation Eref welcomed what it called a "breakthrough decision" by the European commission that member states must try to reach indicative 2010 targets for renewable electricity as stated in the directive. Eref sought clarification because it feared that Austria might seek to rely on a footnote that would partially free it from this obligation (EED 08/09/04).
