Greener chemicals research agenda published

European industry moots €5.5bn in annual spending to develop energy efficient materials and cleaner fuels

The European chemical industry's technology platform on sustainable chemistry (SusChem) has issued a 20-year strategic research agenda. One focus will be developing materials to make applications such as refrigerators and home insulation more energy efficient. Other priorities include biofuels and fuel cells. Suschem estimates the strategy will cost €5.5bn per year to implement, €1.8bn of which it says should come from the EU and member states. The technology platform was launched last year (EED 07/07/04) and aims to bring industry research in line with EU priorities. See press release and research agenda.
