Member states back impact assessment agreement

Competitiveness council backs "better regulation" agreement to analyse implications of amending draft legislation

Member states have approved an informal agreement with the European commission and European parliament to ensure all major EU policy proposals undergo wide-ranging economic, environmental and social assessments.

The commission already makes detailed assessments of its initial proposals under the better regulation initiative. Under the "common approach to impact assessment" the parliament and council of ministers will carry out assessments of amendments they propose to commission plans. The idea has already been piloted on a revision of EU rules on batteries (EED 10/11/05).
