New detergent biodegradability rules in force

New EU environmental rules on detergents take effect on Saturday.  The regulation strengthens requirements for biodegradability of detergent surfactants and requires manufacturers to provide ingredients information on product labels. It was passed early last year (EED 14/04/04). Reflecting the new spirit of the times, the European Commission on Friday cited the law as "another example of 'better regulation'". It simplifies previous rules, will make trade in detergents easier and also does more to protect the environment, said EU enterprise commissioner Gunter Verheugen. See press release.
