The EU has agreed to cut its consumption of the ozone-depleting pesticide methyl bromide to a maximum 690 tonnes in 2007. The deal was reached at a meeting of parties to the Montreal protocol on ozone layer protection in New Delhi that ended on Friday.
The EU has slashed its consumption cap from 2,777 tonnes in 2005. Seven EU countries can continue to use methyl bromide in 2007, those with the highest caps being Spain (318 tonnes), Italy (252 tonnes) and France (77 tonnes).
