Five more chemicals are to be considered for addition to a global list of 12 banned substances, parties to the UN Stockholm convention on persistent organic pollutants (Pops) agreed last week at the second meeting of its review committee. The chemicals under review are pesticides alpha and beta-HCH, flame retardant octa-BDE, pentachlorobenzene and short-chained chlorinated paraffins. The committee also adopted risk profiles for five other chemicals, a further step towards their inclusion in the blacklist (EED 15/11/05). Parties are expected to decide on this in 2009.
