Environment ministers from the EU and ten neighbouring countries have endorsed Horizon 2020, an initiative to reduce pollution in the Mediterranean region. Proposed by the European commission in September (EED 07/09/06), the strategy includes a timetable of actions during the EU’s next financial programming period, from 2007-2013. These include implementing a proposed EU marine strategy directive and compliance with various provisions in the 1976 Barcelona convention on the Mediterranean marine environment. The initiative was approved at a meeting in Cairo on Monday. See webpages on Euro-Mediterranean partnership and Horizon 2020, plus FoE press release.
