Rules for monitoring dioxins in food in force

EU member states required to check background levels of dioxins and PCBs pending end-2008 review

Rules on monitoring by EU states of background levels of dioxins and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in food were published in the EU’s official journal on 16 November.  Member states must sample high-risk foods, such as fish, from now until 31 December 2008.  Thresholds will be reviewed again at that point.  Legal limits on dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs in food were passed earlier this year (EED 03/02/06).  See Commission regulation 2006/794/EC and dioxin food safety page.
