EU "maintaining green leadership"

Dimas cites 2006 as year of significant progress for European environmental policies

The European commission has made strong progress on environmental issues in 2006, environment commissioner Stavros Dimas claims in a statement marking the first two years of the Barroso commission, who took office in November 2004.   We have raised "our already high standards" while making implementation by governments and compliance by companies easier, and while showing that environment policy "can contribute positively to growth and employment", Mr Dimas said.  Our actions "will also serve to maintain our leadership" in international climate change negotiations, he added.  See statement.
