MEPs back EU groundwater directive deal

Strasbourg plenary paves way for entry into force by waving through conciliation accord

The European parliament approved a conciliation deal to revise the EU’s groundwater directive on Tuesday.  The agreement was thrashed out between parliament representatives and the Finnish EU presidency two months ago (EED 18/10/06), based on an earlier agreement among governments (EED 27/06/05).  The new law is one of the most important daughter directives under the EU’s 2000 water framework directive.  It will enter force after being rubber-stamped by EU governments.  See European parliament news item and groundwater directive amendment package, plus releases from ALDE and PSE groups.
