EU curbs on mercury devices enter force

Ban on mercury in thermometers to apply from October, in barometers a year later

New EU rules restricting the marketing and use of certain mercury-containing measuring devices entered force on Wednesday following publication in the bloc’s official journal. The restrictions were agreed by governments and MEPs in July (EED 10/07/07).

Under the new rules member states must ban from October 2008 mercury in all fever thermometers. They must also ban it in similar devices, such as manometers and blood-pressure meters, that are intended for public sale.
