Netherlands raises bar on green public purchasing

Dutch government targets 100 per cent sustainable procurement by 2010, trumps forthcoming EU goal

The Dutch government has set itself a target for all goods and services procurement to meet sustainability standards by 2010, the Netherlands' environment ministry announced on Monday.  Regional and local governments have been given a 50 per cent green procurement target by the same date.  Sustainability criteria will be published next year for 80 product groups including office furniture, paper, catering, energy, buildings, and construction work.  The Dutch targets look set to exceed non-binding goals expected from the European commission by year-end (EED 26/09/06).
