Better regulation "aims at green deregulation"

Purpose of EU simplification drive is to undermine environmental laws, says former senior commission official

The European commission's "better regulation" campaign is motivated by a desire to undermine environmental rules, a former high-ranking European commission official said on Tuesday. "In my opinion the purpose of better regulation is to deregulate EU environmental policy," Ludwig Krämer told a conference in Brussels on better waste regulation. Mr Krämer, who headed the environment directorate's waste unit, criticised the commission for singling out revised EU waste shipments rules for simplification "after only three months in force". The better regulation drive is headed by EU industry commissioner Günter Verheugen (EED 23/06/06). See conference website.
