The management board of the European chemicals agency (Echa) has elected European commission official Geert Dancet to be the agency's executive director. The 51-year Belgian has held the post provisionally since June and was previously head of the industry directorate's Reach unit. The appointment will be made formal after a hearing of Mr Dancet in the European parliament in the week of 17 December, but the assembly has no power to block the decision. The commission's decision to shortlist only two candidates for the job aroused controversy last month (EED 26/09/07). See Echa press release.
