New EU nuclear safety group holds first meeting

Regulators from 27 member states start talks to raise standard of nuclear safety and waste management

Regulatory representatives from all 27 EU member states gathered in Brussels on Friday for the first meeting of a new high-level group on nuclear safety and waste management (EED 30/07/07). "It is up to each member state to decide whether to have nuclear power or not," said EU energy commissioner Andris Piebalgs, "but the question of nuclear safety and waste management concerns everybody."  The group will formulate advice to the European commission on improving nuclear safety and waste management across Europe.  See press release.
