Swiss "will not join EU ETS before 2010"

Official says deal to link Swiss scheme to EU carbon trading would take years to agree

Swiss industrial installations will not be able to trade carbon credits with those in the EU's emission trading scheme before 2010, ENDS has learned. Switzerland could soon decide whether to begin talks on a link to the EU scheme, a government official said, but it would take at least "two years or more" before a deal with the EU is reached. From 2008 Swiss firms will have to pay a carbon tax or join a national trading scheme (EED 04/07/07). EU negotiations with Norway are closer to fruition (EED 20/09/07).
