France warned of fines over EU energy tax law

Commission initiates repeat infringement proceeding against Paris for failing to transpose 2003 directive

The European commission is to send France a first written warning of repeat court proceedings over its alleged failure to adopt into national law an EU energy tax agreed four years ago.  The letter of formal notice is the first step on the ladder to court action and follows France's condemnation at the European court of justice six months ago (EED 29/03/07).  If found guilty a second time it could be forced to pay lump sum and daily fines until it introduces the tax.  See European commission press release.
