Austria ploughs €140m into water management

Government approves funding after study finds over half of waters risked failing to meet EU framework law goals

The Austrian government has approved €140m in funding for water management support measures to 2015 in a bid to improve implementation of the EU water framework directive in the country's rivers, the environment ministry announced on Wednesday. A national survey had revealed that there was a risk that the directive's requirement for "good" water quality status would not be met in 56 per cent of waters. The new fund should "help the rapid implementation of urgently needed measures," the ministry said. See Austrian environment ministry press release (German).
