Finns impound ship over scrapping fears

Environment institute sceptical of owner's claims that old vessel not being sent for cheap waste disposal

Finland's environmental authorities are refusing to allow a ship to sail from the port of Vaasa because of concerns the vessel may be destined for scrapping in the far East.  The authorities says the ship's owners have not backed up their claims that the C Express, which was decommissioned from service in Finland two years ago, will continue to be used.  The ban will remain in force until they can prove the vessel will be used intact or scrapped safely.  Similar recent concerns have led to an EU action plan on ship scrapping (EED 22/05/07).  See Finnish Environment Institute bulletin article.
