Steel packaging recycling rates rose by three percentage points in 2006 to 66 per cent, according to the latest figures from industry trade body Apeal (EED 08/11/07). The volume of steel recycled increased by five per cent, it said. Apeal claims the recycling saved emissions of 4.7m tonnes of carbon dioxide in Europe last year. Lead states are Belgium, with 93 per cent recycling, and Germany with 89 per cent. Rates are lower in eastern countries but rising fast, with big jumps recorded in the Czech Republic, Poland and Latvia. See Apeal press release.
