UK reports electroscrap collection compliance

Industry ministry assessment of scheme's first three months says target fo 4kg by 2008 easily beaten

The UK has collected enough waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in the first three months of a national compliance scheme to exceed EU-set targets, its industry ministry has reported. The UK was late to implement the WEEE directive (EED 14/12/06), but in an assessment of early results from the compliance scheme, which began in July, the ministry says it has already collected the equivalent of seven kilograms of waste per person per year, well above the directive's target of 4kg by 2008.
