New EU ecolabels for televisions and flooring

The European Commission has approved the first environmental criteria for awarding the EU flower ecolabel to televisions and hard floor coverings such as tiles and stone. The television label anticipates draft EU electroscrap recycling laws; manufacturers must pledge to take back and recycle appliances, which must themselves be 90% recyclable and be highly energy-efficient. All PBDE and short-chain chloroparaffin flame retardants are banned. The flooring label obliges producers to adhere to a set of conditions governing material quarrying and finishing, including 90% water recycling. See EU ecolabel pages.
