Slovakia plots deposit system for PET bottles

Environment ministry seeks ways of reducing pollution caused by uncollected plastic bottles

The Slovak environment ministry has proposed establishing a national deposit-return system for PET bottles to reduce the environmental impact of uncollected plastic bottles.  The proposal was announced last week at a meeting to discuss ways of tackling the problem.  The government said an amendment to existing waste legislation would be tabled "as soon as possible".  Green groups welcomed the move but industry stakeholders in the trade and transport sector raised "hygiene and storage" concerns.  See government press release (in Slovak)
