MEPs accused of weakening sustainable tyre plan

Industry committee criticised for bowing to industry pressure over proposal to phase out inefficient and noisy tyres

The European parliament's industry committee has been criticised for watering down EU plans to phase out inefficient and noisy tyres following a vote on Tuesday.  Green transport group T&E accused the committee of trying to "delay and weaken" a European commission proposal tabled in May (EED 23/05/08).

MEPs adopted an opinion to the internal market committee leading parliament discussions on the issue.  The opinion's main elements are mirrored in a draft report by rapporteur Andreas Schwab, according to T&E.  The group also accused MEPs of bowing to industry pressure.
