France explores options to cut packaging waste

Study assesses benefits of options such as introducing deposit-return system to achieve national and EU goals

French environment and energy management agency Ademe is exploring options to further reduce packaging waste in France.  The initiative is intended to find ways of achieving objectives announced by the government last year (EED 08/01/08).

Another goal is to help France achieve recycling targets set in the EU packaging waste directive (EED 19/02/04).  The EU member state is expected to meet all material-specific targets for 2008 except for plastics, according to a consultancy study released by Ademe at the end of last week.
