Commission unveils tyre labelling proposal

Manufacturers would be required to disclose information on tyres' fuel efficiency, rolling resistance and noise

EU tyre manufacturers could soon be required to disclose information about the environmental performance of their products, according to a draft law tabled by the European commission on Thursday.  Leaflets would have to be displayed at point of sale.

The commission proposed to introduce an EU labelling scheme that would encourage consumers to buy greener and less noisy tyres.  The label would apply from 2012 and include information on the fuel efficiency, wet grip and external rolling noise performance.
