EU green state aid spending drops in 2007

Commission says German energy tax exemption restructuring behind fall in subsidies for environmental improvement

The amount of state aid granted by EU governments for environmental purposes fell by €2bn in 2007, the European commission has reported in its latest "scoreboard" of state subsidies.

EU states granted €12bn of aid in 2007, down from €14bn in 2006 (EED 21/05/08). The commission said this was due mainly to changes last year in the system of energy tax exemptions in Germany, the EU's second-largest grantor of environmental state aid.
