Ministers rubber-stamp EU chemical restrictions

Agriculture council gives final approval to deal on marketing restrictions on ammonium nitrate fertilisers and solvents

EU governments have rubber-stamped new restrictions on ammonium nitrate fertilisers and the solvents Degme and Degbe, polyurethane intermediate MDI and cyclohexane.

The new EU rules were agreed politically in the summer and will apply over the next two years (EED 11/07/08).  They were formally approved by agriculture ministers in Brussels this week and will be published in the EU official journal imminently.  The restrictions were agreed under the 1976 "limitations" directive, which is being superseded by the EU's Reach policy.
