MEPs back new EU tyre noise and friction goals

Internal market committee makes minor changes to European commission proposals

The European parliament's internal market committee has backed European commission proposals tabled earlier this year to introduce stricter noise and rolling resistance standards for road vehicle tyres (EED 23/05/08).

Voting on Tuesday, the committee backed the commission's proposed standards for car tyres and tightened them for other vehicles, despite internal pressure to relax the noise standards (EED 05/11/08 and EED 28/11/08).  But it delayed by one year - until 2019 - the proposed full introduction of the new standards.  The committee opinion will now be forwarded for a plenary vote.
