Reach chemical pre-registration phase closes

Agency expects "swift start" to data sharing phase of new EU chemical policy despite unexpectedly large number of submissions

European firms have submitted over two million preliminary information dossiers to the European chemicals agency (Echa) under the EU's Reach policy, according to figures released by the agency after the six-month pre-registration window ended on Monday night.

The agency received 2.2m pre-registration submissions, fifteen times more than anticipated, by the 1 December deadline. Numbers ballooned beyond expectations mainly because different firms in the same supply chain sent multiple pre-registrations for the same substance.  One-third of all submitting firms were British. Almost one-third of submissions came from Germany.
