Industry fires new shot at pesticide approval plan

Prices of key staples such as potatoes and wheat could increase by at least 20 per cent if a proposal for stricter EU pesticide approval rules is adopted, according to a study commissioned by the European crop protection association (Ecpa).

The study was released this week as MEPs began their second reading of the proposal (EED 08/10/08). Ecpa called for a "comprehensive impact assessment" of the plan from the European food safety authority. Pesticide makers had previously warned the plan would hit them hard (EED 23/10/07).
